Domestic airports on Iceland

With no trains on Iceland, using the small Domestic airports is a great way to explore

There are four domestic airports on Iceland, so this is one country where using the plane is actually a really good and practical way to get around. You can of course drive round the country, but you might be in the car for a long, long time if you are looking to reach the furthest outreaches of Iceland from Reykjavik.

Using the small airfields is a quick way to explore Iceland and you will get a birds eye view of some spectacular scenery on your journey.

There are four domestic airports on Iceland so you can fly across the country easily. You can also fly to Greenland and The Faroe Islands from these domestic airports.

Airports in Iceland

There is one International airport and four domestic airports

Most visitors to Iceland will arrive at Keflavik Airport, though there will be some cruise ship arrivals directly in the Reykjavik harbours too. If you are arriving in Keflavik and are not staying in Reykjavik, you may actually need to transfer into Reykjavik and then take a smaller plane from the Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV) to your final destination. You can book your transfer to Reykjavik from Keflavik using one of the links below. You can also fly from Iceland to Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

The four domestic airports in Iceland are:

Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV)

Egilsstaðir Airport (EGS)

Ísafjörður Airport (IFJ)

Akureyri Airport (AEY)

Helpful tips for the Iceland domestic flights

The flights are on small planes which offer less services on board, so do not expect a similar experience to your International flight into Iceland.

Beware of hand luggage restrictions. The planes are smaller so the corresponding overhead lockers are smaller too. The cleverly packaged case you snugly fitted in your Boeing overhead locker may struggle to find any room on the Bombardier style planes in use domestically.

Your main baggage will fit in the hold though and in theory at least your hand luggage will find its way in there too if it won’t fit onboard.
